My Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Painting, from Start to Finish!

The Final Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" Painting

The Final Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" Painting

One of my favorite outcomes of a painting I've painted is the iconic cover of the Sgt. Peppers and the Lonely Hearts Club Band album by The Beatles. When a friend asked if I would paint the iconic album cover for him, I thought it was a practical joke. It was the first time I had ever laid eyes on the album cover and to be quiet honest, it was also the first time I was ever intimated to paint something.  There are 61 faces, not including the 4 front runner faces of The Beatles themselves, but all 61 were all famous faces throughout history. John, Paul, Ringo, and George all chose iconic song writers, poets, actors, and stoic public figures that they idolized and that had inspired them. Some of these recognizable faces include Shirley Temple, Bob Dylan, Marilyn Monroe, and Edgar Allen Poe, just to name a few. I knew there was no pressure whatsoever to make sure everyone's face was absolutely perfect. No pressure at all...

The original painting size is 22 by 22 inches, which left most of the faces about the size of a penny or smaller. Found toward the bottom of the painting are two dolls on either side of the Beatles's flowers, both of which had faces smaller than the tip of a pencil eraser. Because of the high level of detail in the album cover itself, I could not find a photograph online in a high enough resolution to use as a reference. Instead, I went out and bought the actual vinyl album. However, there was a lot of wear and tear to the old classic, so I had to use multiple reference photos to fill in some of the missing eyes, ears, mouths etc. Over the course of a 6 month period, the painting finally became a reality and its completion was a relieving, but proud moment for me. Sometimes, I sit back and look at the picture of the painting and wonder how I myself ever painted such an epic album cover. As far as I know, I'm the only person crazy enough to ever paint the album cover in its realistic style, but I consider it a good crazy.
